The Opportunity and Access Symposium (formerly Equity Symposium) gathers researchers, practitioners, and prominent thought leaders advocating for racial equity in gifted education. The event is held virtually in the Spring, and is ideal for school administrators, teachers, district and state directors, coordinators, and supervisors who wish to engage in meaningful professional learning and in-depth conversations to achieve measurable outcomes for gifted and talented programs.
Session topics include strategies for identifying and serving gifted and talented Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino, and Indigenous students; supporting gifted and high-potential students and their families; building school and district infrastructures that support racial equity; and resources to advance equity in gifted and talented education.
Expected requirements from a planning group member:
Meet virtually 3-4 times prior to the Opportunity and Access Symposium, depending on needs of the event (December-May).
Help determine needed topics and areas of need for today’s educators of gifted students.
Review proposed schedule and determine options for invited and open calls for programming/sessions.
Help provide suggestions for keynote speakers or featured speakers.
If a call for proposals is used, review proposals for inclusion in the event programming.
For anyone available on the day of the event (virtual), help with monitoring chats and serving on any needed roundtable sessions/networking sessions.
Help sharing/promoting the Symposium.
