The purpose of Parenting for High Potential (PHP) is to provide a practical tool for families striving to meet the needs of the whole gifted child at home, in school, and within the community. Unlike a scholarly journal, we do not publish theoretical analyses, reviews of research, research reports, or other technical articles written in a more formal, academic style.

General Guidelines

Articles for PHP should follow these guidelines:

  • Be family-focused, with easy-to-understand language.

  • Active, approachable voice is important to effectively reach families—so while grounded in research and theory, articles should be written in a newsstand Parents magazine style.

  • Each article requires at least 1-2 Endnotes to illustrate the theory, research, principle, or best practice supporting the message. Authors may use their own research as a source.

  • Readers request articles that provide the overview of a topic, followed by a "how to" sidebar, fact sheet, role play script, list, or appropriate questions to ask in how to apply the theory or topic to their situation. Different formats—such as Q&A style, opinion pieces, advice columns are welcome.

  • Articles should be written from an inclusive point of view that is representative of multiple backgrounds and diversity (in any of its many forms).

  • Include 1-5 additional resources (books, websites, articles, blogs, podcasts) you would recommend to families that reflects the theme of the article, should they be interested in reading further on the topic.

  • Every article is accompanied by an Author’s Note (bio). Please include a short bio of authors (each approx. 50-75 words) with the article.

Pitch ideas are welcome. Authors should feel free to contact NAGC in advance or during the article crafting process for input or ideas to ensure their article is best suited for Parenting for High Potential.

Preparing Your Submission

Parenting for High Potential is a peer-reviewed publication. The editor refers qualified manuscripts to reviewers who have expertise in the subject/topic addressed in the manuscript. Reviewers' comments and any suggestions for revisions are then provided to the author with a deadline for re-submission.

To avoid delay, authors should follow these instructions:

  • Manuscripts should be between 800 and 2,000 words.

  • Write concisely and in the active voice.

  • Use a 1-inch margins on all sides. Please use a font such as Times, Times New Roman, or Arial rather than an unusual or decorative font as they may delay the processing of your material.

  • References, listed as Endnotes, should follow the APA style as outlined in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th edition). [Special Note: Authors should not use the automatic Endnote feature within MS Word. A simple number within the body of the text that associates with a number at the end of the article in an Endnotes citation section is preferred.]

  • Manuscripts should represent only original work that has not been published previously or is not being considered for publication elsewhere.

Submitting Your Article

All prospective authors should submit their material electronically via this link. Include the manuscript as an attachment to the form in a current version of Microsoft Word. If you are unable to submit your manuscript via this form for any reason, please reach out to NAGC for further instructions.

Review Process

PHP conducts an extensive review of each article, with the goal of ensuring that every article published will be as strong as possible. Please expect to make revisions before final acceptance and publication.

The review process can require weeks to months; the final acceptance and subsequent publication will depend on the time needed to complete required revisions.

NAGC retains the copyright for all articles accepted for publication. Authors are free to use their own material, given it is not in the original publication format.

Articles must be submitted via the form sent in the confirmation email. NAGC does not pay authors for PHP submissions.
